The abundance of cheap electricity has motivated the Norwegians to consume it at rather extravagant rates. As a result, Norway generates over 98% of its electricity from hydroelectric power. There are an almost infinite number of deep, narrow river valleys (1) and it is almost always raining. If you are not familiar with the weather and terrain of Norway, it’s as though it was designed by Odin to show us where hydroelectric power plants should be built. They also used the proceeds from the North Sea oil fields to build dams and hydroelectric power plants. As a consequence, everything in Norway is nice – the hospitals, the roads, the schools, the railroad stations, the trash cans, even the people – all nice. Like any good socialist country, Norway created a state-owned company to extract the oil and reinvested the profits in infrastructure and education. Then oil was discovered in Norway’s portion of the North Sea – a lot of it. Until the 1960s, Norway was consigned to being a quiet nation on the edge of Europe known primarily for fjords and fishing. While there are a number of factors which drive Norway’s wealth and high quality of life, an abundance of cheap energy is certainly among the most important.
It is always near the top of any lists which rank things such as livability or happiness. Norway is the 6 th wealthiest country on Earth, with a per capita GDP of approximately $64,000 per year. I have been there both for business and pleasure and in my opinion it is the most beautiful country I have ever seen.

If not, then the Pump may need to be replaced.Several weeks ago, my daughter came home and said “Dad, why does Norway have to import trash to keep its power plants running? You should write a column on that.” And so I have.įirst, in the interest of full disclosure, I love Norway. The first place to start is to turn the water on (after you get the engine running) and see if you get any water pressure through your trigger gun. If the engine is running just fine and has been running, and you've ran the pressure washer without water running through the system, this can certainly damage the Pump it needs water circulating through it or it can damage seals, gaskets and other components. The carburetor needs to be removed and disassembled and cleaned with carburetor cleaner and any damaged or worn gaskets and or seals replaced. When these become blocked the engine does not get the required fuel to run. There are very tiny passage ways or orifices in the carburetor that atomize the fuel for the engine to burn. If the engine will run for a few seconds then it is probably a carburetor issue, it probably needs to be cleaned. This only happens when the pump is very worn or damaged causing it to mechanically bind or lock up. The only way the pump can affect the engine is by putting to much of a drag on the engine so that it will not allow the engine to turn or rotate properly. Not sure how much labor would be if I had someone else do it, but presumably it would bring the cost to fix it up to at least 50% the original cost of the whole unit. A self-installed replacement pump would be about $100. If not, what is likely to be damaged? I can't quite recall the original price at Lowe's, but I think it was in the neighborhood of $350.
Is the damage most likely confined to the pump (i.e., only need a new pump)? It is possible it ran for a while on low oil. The air filter is clean (never replaced).
Now, additionally, it won't keep running for more than a few seconds. Starting last season, it usually wouldn't start without using starter fluid.
Once time it ran for 5 minutes without water. I haven't tried replacing the spark plug could it be damaged excessively from running the motor without water pressure? Over the years I have run it without remembering to turn the water on (a habit I think I have finally kicked). I have a Troy-Bilt 020486 pressure washer (2.3 gpm, 2700 psi) with a Briggs & Stratton motor.
